Dogs

The French Bulldog

Background
The “Bouledogue Francais,” or French Bulldog, likely descended from the English bulldog. Judging by his smaller size and bat-like ears, most think that the French Bulldog actually arose from the toy or miniature Bulldog, which originated in Nottinham, England, where he was used as a ratter in the shops of laceworkers.

The German Shorthaired Pointer

Background
We don’t know the precise origin of the German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP), but what we do know is that he was bred to be a prolific hunter. Able to hunt and retrieve all sorts of game, including pheasant, quail, grouse, waterfowl, raccoons, possum, and even deer!

Developed in 19th century Germany and a descendant of the German Bird Dog (with some English Pointer mixed in for good measure), the German Shorthaired Pointer is one of the most popular dog breeds in America.

The Havanese

The Havanese
The Havanese is part of the Bichon family and a highly intelligent toy breed. Eager to please, the Havanese is a great family pet but doesn't like to be alone.

The Miniature Schnauzer

Background
The Miniature Schnauzer breed comes from humble beginnings: they were once kept as small farm dogs and ratters – dogs kept around to control rat problems – in Germany. Created by crossing a standard Schnauzer with the Affenpinscher breed, the Miniature Schnauzer breed became popular in America in the years after WWII.

The Poodle

The Poodle

Background
You may think the Poodle is all style, but the “Poodle clip” that makes the appearance of the Poodle famous was actually designed by hunters to make the dogs more aerodynamic in the water!
