12-week-old blue Pit bull-type puppy, Jax, was stolen from his family’s home during a burglary in Austin, TX. “The miracle dog” took matters into his own paws and escaped by jumping out of the back of his kidnappers’ pickup truck. Luckily, Jax was found and brought to a local vet by a good Samaritan.
**Update: We reached out to the veterinary hospital Jax was taken to and talked about his amazing journey. Behind the Scenes: The Rescue of Jax, The Kidnapped Puppy >>
The kidnapping
After a burglary, Jordan Quick and his girlfriend woke up to discover something of much more value was missing. According to Lindsay Bramson of KXAN, Jax, was taken from his family during the break in, causing Jax’s guardians to fear he was lost forever. But little did they know that Jax was quite the escape artist.
The escape
Jordan soon started posting pictures of Jax online. They even discovered that the thief was caught on tape by a local security camera. Little did Jordan know that Jax was doing his part to get home as well -- the courageous canine jumped out of the back of the thieves’ white Ford F-150 pickup truck on the highway. Luckily, Jax was rescued when a good Samaritan pulled over and brought him to a local vet.
Soon after, Jordan received a Facebook message explaining Jax was safe and being taken care of at Allandale Veterinary Clinic.
Back home, but with broken bones
“I can’t describe how overcome with joy I was that my dog was found and he was alive and somebody was taking care of him. I was shaking,” Jordan told KXAN. But even though Jax is back home, it will be a while before he’s fully recovered. Jumping out of the truck caused road rash and a broken pelvis that will need surgery. Jordan has set up a Go Fund Me page to help with medical bills and public outcry has been so extreme that they’ve already raised more than their goal of $2,300. Jax is expected to make a full recovery and we couldn’t be happier. We’ve also reached out to Allandale Veterinary Clinic for more information and to follow this story as it progresses.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: truck owners and pet parents
While the thieves were clearly not thinking about the puppy’s welfare, Jax’s story serves as a reminder that you should never let a dog ride in the back of a pickup truck. Don’t miss these tips for keeping your dog happy and healthy on car rides:
