Background:
The Singapura’s origins are controversial and many aren’t convinced of his home country. In 1975 an American couple returned to the U.S. from Singapore with three brown-ticked cats: one female and two males. At the time it was naturally assumed that this breed must have originated in Singapore; however, in 1987 it was reported by an American breeder, who had gone on a fact finding trip to Singapore, that he had discovered documents revealing these cats were actually from the U.S. The documents indicated they were taken into Singapore in 1974.
Despite the controversy, the government of Singapore named the breed a national living treasure in 1991.
Cat Facts:
- The Singapura is one of the smallest cat breeds.
- The Singapura comes in only one color, brown with a yellowish ivory tint.
- The eyes of a Singapura are their best known feature: massive and dark like there’s mascara around them.
- The Singapura is so small that it will only weigh about 8 lbs. at full size.
What's the Singapura like?
Don’t let the size of a Singapura fool you, these little guys are full of energy and love to jump. They are also very curious and will follow you everywhere including your office space. Some of their favorite things to play with lie on your desk: pens, keyboards, and basically anything you don’t want them to have.
Singapuras don’t like loud noises and may hide from them.
Takeaway Points:
- Because of how small the cat is, in general, grooming is a breeze and their short coat makes it even easier.
- The Singapura is definitely an extrovert. They’ll get along with anything: humans, children, other cats, and even dogs.
- If you have allergies, this cat can make them worse because they produce dander (although no cat breed is better or worse for people with allergies).
