The Cymric

Background:

The Cymric (pronounced “kim-rick”), is considered by many to be a semi-long-haired version of the Manx. The Cymric originated on the Isle of Man, which is an island in between England and Northern Ireland. According to records on the Isle of Man, the reason Cymrics don’t have tails is due to a genetic mutation.

In the 1960s, Cymric kittens were taken to Canada and it wasn’t until they arrived on the North American Continent that the first breeding programs began.

Cat Facts:

  • This muscular cat weighs in between 7 and 13 pounds.
  • The Cymric can come in any color except for chocolate brown, pointed, lavender or patterned.
  • Cymrics are available with any one of four different tails.
  • Cymrics actually have a double coat which continuously lengthens from the shoulders to the hindquarters.

What is the Cymric like?

The Cymric loves to play and is very intelligent. He is also very good with his paws. You might want to invest in some “baby-proofing,” seeing as he can teach himself how to open cabinets and doors. The Cymric loves to give love to the entire family and he’s even good with children.

The Cymric is generally healthy but because he lacks a tail spinal defects can occur, which can result in neurological issues: problems defecating or urinating.

Takeaway Points:

  • Cymrics get along great with other pets, including dogs.
  • A gentle combing or brushing twice a week to prevent tangles will keep the Cymric happy during summer and winter. Pay extra attention in the spring and fall as those are the shedding seasons.
