The Welsh Springer Spaniel

Background
The Welsh Springer Spaniel’s history dates as far back as 7000 BC when he accompanied hunters. During the Mesolithic age, springers would travel with hunters along the coastlines of Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland.

In the 1700s, Welsh Spring Spaniels began gaining immense popularity, especially amongst hunters. However, the English Springer Spaniel and other spaniels started replacing the Welsh in the 1800s.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1914.

What’s the Welsh Springer Spaniel like?
The Welsh Springer Spaniel is definitely a family dog. He is devoted, loving, gentle, and good with children. He can be wary of strangers but once you’ve given him approval he’ll open right up. He makes a great watchdog.

Welshies are very active and need daily exercise. They’d love to go for a walk, jog, or hike with you. They’re also great companions for hunters.

Welsh Springer Spaniels are pretty easygoing but they can be stubborn, so start obedience training and socialization early. Be firm and consistent but never harsh and always use positive reinforcement. Treats are always a nice reward!

A Welshie’s coat should be brushed about twice a week and also combed to rid it of any tangles or mats and prevent them in the future. Like a person, he’ll also need a trim every so often.
